Bird and Wildlife Watching in Oregon's Washington County

Squabbling Sparrows by Barbara Scoles

Oregon is undoubtedly one of the finer places in the country for birding, as it's filled with a rich mixture of habitats including forests, wetlands, marshes, lakes, rivers, and beaches. The state is also fortunate to be far enough north that it's the summer home of many birds, yet far enough south that it's the winter home of many others.

Many species of birds live year-round in Washington County, and dozens of species are just "passing through" during the fall and spring migration seasons. Anyone interested in birding will always have a long list of examples to find, more than 100 different species can be regularly found here, from the perennial abundance of Mallard ducks to the rare seasonal sightings of the Snow Goose.

Native mammals including beaver, otter, coyote and other species may also be found in protected habitats throughout the area. Dawn and dusk are the best times to spot these creatures.

Washington County is filled with excellent and often lively bird and wildlife habitats. The Tualatin River National Wildlife RefugeCooper Mountain Nature Park, Fernhill Wetlands, Jackson Bottom Wetlands Preserve, Tualatin Hills Nature Park and Interpretive Center are just a handful of the many prime bird and wildlife watching spots throughout the area.

Bring your binoculars, scopes and cameras and head out on a birding and wildlife adventure in Oregon’s Washington County.
