Belted Kingfisher Watching in Oregon

The Belted Kingfisher is the only one of the four varieties of North American Water Kingfishers that is found in Oregon. Some will spend summers in Canada and winters in the American southewest, but many will stay in Oregon all year round. They are usually around 12 to 14 inches in length as adults, and they have large prominent heads with a shaggy crest. Both males and females have a blue head with a white band in the neck area, though females tend to have brighter colors, which is rare among birds. Belted Kingfishers primarily eat fish, but they will also eat frogs, small insects, and even small mammals and reptiles. It's best to look for them in the early morning or evening hours, and binoculars help considerably. Belted Kingfishers are known for hovering over the water for a period of time before they plunge in for their prey, so this is one of the better ways to spot them during feeding times.

They one of many bird species commonly found in the Tualatin National Wildlife Refuge and nearby, and they are they actively breed in Oregon.
