Chipping Sparrow Watching in Oregon

Chipping Sparrows are common throughout North America, and many are known to spend the warmer months in Oregon. Usually between 5 and 6 inches long, these birds are easiest to identify by their brownish red head markings. If you have a backyard bird feeding station then this is one of the most likely birds to take you up on the free-food offer. The Chipping Sparrow will generally eat seeds and crumbs from the ground, and during their summer stay in Oregon they'll also supplement their diets with small insects and even berries. Their loud trilling call is distinctive so if you are studying bird vocalizations this is a good one to work with.

Habitats for Chipping Sparrows

If you put sunflower seeds in your backyard feeder then you are likely to be visited by Chipping Sparrows in summer. They generally like open wooded areas that also have shrubs, so public parks are a popular spot. They are occasionally found in the Tualatin National Wildlife Refuge during spring, but as summer approaches these birds like to find places with more abundant food.
