Evening Grosbeak Watching in Oregon

The Evening Grosbeak is a large member of the Finch family, which is common to most of the US and Canada, and is mostly known for spending winters in Oregon. Through the Willamette Valley region these birds are known to live all year round in fairly small numbers, but they are spread throughout the state in winter.Typically about 7 inches long in maturity, the male has more distinctive yellow patches, while the female is a duller color all over. They eat mostly seeds and berries found on or near the ground, though they are also common at bird feeding stations. They have powerful beaks which are able to crack and get into some larger seeds that other birds can't eat.
