House Finch Watching in Oregon

House Finches are native to the western United States and Mexico, and are quite abundant in most of Oregon. Usually a bit over 5 inches long, they are mostly a grayish brown with streaks, but males have red faces and necks that really stand out. These are very social birds that are often living and feeding near human populations, so they are one of the most commonly spotted birds in general. The House Finch eats mostly seeds and some fruit, and are often seen in large groups feeding on the ground when food is present. They are also frequent visitors to backyard feeding stations, and if you put sunflower seeds in your feeder you might be overwhelmed by the response.
