House Sparrow Watching in Oregon

House Sparrows were introduced to North America in New York in 1851, and have slowly spread across the continent, to now be very common in Oregon and all over. As their name would indicate, this bird prefers to live near humans, so they are far more common in residential areas and almost never in forests. They often sing from within trees or bushes in a group, so this can be one of the easier ways to find them.Their diet consists mostly of seeds and bread crumbs, so they are often found in parks and on streets where humans have left such things behind. They can also eat insects and are known to pick them off the front of cars that have just parked. The House Sparrow is known to be crafty and clever, and quick to adapt to new methods of finding food.

Habitats for House Sparrows

House Sparrows often live in cavities high in housing structures. They are often found in parks, and will get very close to humans who are handing out seed or bread crumbs. You can also frequently find them in supermarket and fast food restaurant parking lots, as scavenging the ground in these places can be fruitful.
