Mew Gull Watching in Oregon

Known as the Common Gull in Europe and Asia, the Mew Gull is known to spend winters along the Oregon coast, though not in great numbers and with great reliability. In North America the greatest concentration can be found during summer in Alaska and northwestern Canada, and along the California coast during winter. They are gray on the back and white on the front, and during winter their head is streaked gray as well.As with other gulls, the Mew Gull is known to be a scavenger and will eat nearly anything, including small animals. This highly omnivorous nature makes finding them based on their prefered diet quite difficult. During their time in Oregon they are more likely to be feeding on fish than anything else, but they can find plenty of other options near the coast.

Habitats for Mew Gulls

The Mew Gull will usually nest on the ground or on cliffs, in a well concealed structure made of grass, twigs, and roots, but they sometimes nest in trees. When they are feeding in the morning and early evening hours they are likely to be found on or very near the beach.

Best seasons to see Mew Gulls in Oregon

Winter is by far the most likely time, though during spring and fall you might find them in migration further inland.
