Red-winged Blackbird Watching in Oregon

The Red-winged Blackbird is one of the more common birds throughout North America, and Oregon is part of the vast territory in which they live all year round. Typically between 7 and 9 inches long, these birds have slight variations within the species that can make them tough to identify, though males are mostly black with red patches on the wings, and females are generally streaked brown.During summer their diet consists mostly of insects, so they tend to live in places with standing water nearby. They are also very territorial during the breeding season so they'll often attack larger animals or even humans if their nests are approached. During winter they mostly eat grain seeds so they spend this time near agriculture.

Habitats for Red-winged Blackbirds

The Red-winged Blackbird prefers to nest and spend the summer breeding season in marshy areas, and they can be found in almost any kind of wetland, either fresh or salt water. During colder months you are more likely to find them foraging for seeds in a field or grassland. They are commonly found in the Tualatin National Wildlife Refuge among other places in the area, and they are one of the species that actively breed in Oregon.
