Snowy Egret Watching in Oregon

The Snowy Egret is a relatively small and white member of the Heron family, and they are not one of the more common birds in norther Oregon, though they are known to live in the southern part of the state. In south central Oregon they are found all year round in some places, and along the Oregon coast there are some Snowy Egrets during the winter period. In northern Oregon they are considered Accidental, meaning you might see one but they aren't known to live in the area.Snowy Egrets are usually around two feet tall as adults, and their bodies are white while their bills are long and black, with a yellow marking just below the eyes most of the time, which turns to red during breeding season. They eat fish, crustaceans, and insects, and many live near the ocean while others live near inland ponds. In Oregon there are examples of both in the southern part of the state.

Habitats for Snowy Egrets

Snowy Egrets typically nest near coastal wetlands or near inland ponds. They can often be spotted wading in shallow water as they scan for prey. Sometimes they fly with their feet just above the surface of the water, and they are often found near groups of other wading birds.
