Tundra Swan Watching in Oregon

The Tundra Swan predictably breeds and spends its summers in the northernmost reaches of the continent, but they spend fall and winter in much of Oregon and states just to the east. They are among the smallest of the swans, but still are usually over three and a half feet in length. The color of breeding age Tundra Swans is white with black feet and a mostly black bill, while immature ones are often a grayish-white color.During their summer months up north they prefer to spend most or all of the time on dry land, but during fall and winter they can mostly be found on water, and in large flocks. They mostly eat aquatic grasses, often plunging their heads underwater for long periods, but they'll also eat grasses or grains on dry land.

Habitats for Tundra Swans

The Tundra Swan is mainly restricted to the eastern two thirds of Oregon, and they prefer to live near shallow estuaries, lakes, and ponds. They nest on dry ground, but spend most of their days feeding in groups in shallow bodies of water.

Best seasons to see Tundra Swans in Oregon
