Winter Wren Watching in Oregon

While many Winter Wrens spend the warm months in Canada, they are known to live year round in much of Oregon, and the south eastern part of the state is the northernmost summer home for the migratory ones. Only 3 to 4 inches long, these songbirds are known for their interesting and complicated calls, so they may be easier to hear than they are to spot.Their diet consists almost exclusively or insects and spiders, and most of their days are spent hunting and feeding. They tend to move slowly when on trees, and their flights between trees are short, so that combined with their mostly brown colorings can create a challenge for the birder.

Habitats for Winter Wrens

Winter Wrens can be found all over Oregon, but they prefer coniferous forests so you'll find the greatest numbers there. They also prefer areas with dead or fallen trees, as these often contain many insects that these birds like. They are sometimes found in the Tualatin National Wildlife Refuge among other places in the area, and they are one of the species that actively breed in Oregon.

Best seasons to see Winter Wrens in Oregon

Winter Wrens can be found all year round in most of Oregon, but only during winter in the south eastern corner of the state. They are best spotted in the early morning and evening hours, so conditions for the birder will be best during summer.
