Yellow-rumped Warbler Watching in Oregon

The Yellow-rumped Warbler is found in great numbers through many parts of North America, including the warmer months in Oregon. In the high deserts in the eastern part of the state there are groups of these birds that live all year round, but in the western parts of the state they are around from spring through fall. In the summer both sexes are mostly gray with white in the wings and patches of yellow in the front, on the sides, and on the face.During summer the Yellow-rumped Warbler spends much of its time hunting insects from the outer branches of trees, and they'll occasionally be spotted at backyard feeding stations feasting on sunflower seeds or raisins. During migration and winter they eat mostly fruit.

Yellow-rumped Warblers are most commonly found in mountainous areas during the summer breeding season, but they are found in smaller numbers all over the state. They prefer coniferous forests, but are also found in mixed woodlands. They are commonly found in the Tualatin National Wildlife Refuge during spring and fall.

These birds arrive from their southern winter spots as early as March, and often stay until late October, and some live all year round in the eastern part of the state. They migrate in huge numbers so they can be quite a sight if you are in their path at the right time of year.
