Yellowthroat Watching in Oregon

Of the different varieties of Yellowthroats that are found in North America, it's the Common Yellowthroat that you can find in Oregon. These songbirds have a bright yellow throat and upper chest, with males having a distinctive black mask. This is a skulking bird so identifying them by sight can be challenging, but their unique call is often heard and is the best way of tracking them. The Common Yellowthroat is about 5 inches long at maturity, and mostly eats insects and spiders. They spend most of their days, usually in pairs, gleaning insects from within thick vegetation, so even with obvious markings they are easy to miss.

Habitats for Yellowthroats

During breeding season the Yellowthroat can often be found in marsh areas throughout the state, but they are found in various wetlands and other environments of thick plantlife near fresh water.
